Chapter 1: The Cocoon Butterfly
Born in "Frostfire Village" on the eastern border of Hylaria—a place as beautiful as a fairy tale. The village sits upon a unique spiritual ley line where the primordial forces of ice and fire coexist in harmony. By day, warm sunlight bathes the ever-frozen crystal gardens, refracting rainbow light; by night, warm flame-moths dance among the frost, illuminating the entire village. This is not a strange or eerie place, but a dreamlike realm blessed by the divine.
From a young age, she showed unusual sensitivity. While other children ran through flower fields, Psyche would quietly observe butterflies. She discovered something wondrous: when a butterfly rested in her palm, she could feel the pulse of life, as if touching the warmth of a soul.
At age seven, sudden disaster struck. Her dearest childhood friend—a girl named "Little Frost"—fell into a frozen ley line fissure while trying to save an injured animal. The extreme cold could freeze any life, and unstable fire elementals churned in the depths. The villagers were helpless, watching as Little Frost's life faded.
Psyche rushed to the fissure without hesitation. In that moment, only one thought filled her mind: "I must save her!" She leaped into the abyss where ice and fire intertwined, tightly holding her friend amid freezing cold and scorching heat. A miracle occurred—the dormant power within Psyche awakened to this fierce protective will. Ice wrapped around them forming a protective cocoon, while flames drove away the lethal cold. When Psyche floated up from the fissure carrying her friend, she radiated light intertwined with ice-blue and fire-red, like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon.
In that moment, Frostfire Village's crystal gardens bloomed with unprecedented light, and the flame-moths danced around her, as if the entire village was celebrating this pure heart of protection.
Chapter 2: Heaven-Gifted Power
The village elders marveled at the power Psyche displayed. This was not a curse, but divine favor upon a pure heart—the sign of a "Soul Guardian." Legend said that only those who harbored the purest protective intentions could awaken this ancient and sacred bloodline.
Psyche was sent to the "Spirit Council" to learn to control this heaven-gifted power. The Council's archmages were delighted to discover: within Psyche lay not only guardian power, but a perfect balance of dual elements. Ice and fire formed wondrous harmony in the depths of her soul, just like the spectacle of Frostfire Village itself—illuminating and nurturing each other.
"This child... is a living blessing," the Chief Mage smiled. "Ice preserves life, fire dispels darkness. She was born to protect."
Under the Council's guidance, Psyche learned to use ice to freeze the pain of the wounded, and fire to purify the erosion of evil. Her power was not for destruction, but for protection—protecting life, protecting souls, protecting all that she loved.
Chapter 3: Before the Dawn
However, this world is not always as beautiful as a fairy tale. In the darkest hour before one dawn, Frostfire Village was attacked by the "Soul-Devouring Behemoth"—an ancient evil entity that specifically consumed the souls of living beings.
The behemoth's target was the village's children. Psyche threw herself before the children without hesitation, building walls of ice and shields of flame. But the behemoth was too powerful; its attacks were not merely physical, but soul-level—it tried to directly extract the children's souls.
At that moment, the protective power within Psyche was pushed to its limit. She made a shocking move—she spread her arms wide, drawing all the children's soul fluctuations into her protective range, while actively welcoming the behemoth's devouring force.
"If you want to take their souls, take mine first!"
The behemoth's devouring power struck Psyche, but did not destroy her as she expected. Instead, her dual elements formed a perfect defense: ice froze and stored the behemoth's power, while fire burned away the evil within. More surprisingly, the hundreds of innocent souls imprisoned within the behemoth flowed into Psyche's protection through this connection.
When dawn (Hemera) finally arrived, Psyche knelt in the ruins, radiating ice-fire colored light. The behemoth had been repelled, and she held within her hundreds of souls awaiting purification. In this moment, she truly understood the true meaning of "Soul Reaver"—not to seize, but to receive; not to devour, but to protect.
Chapter 4: Guardian at Dawn's Edge
Today, Psyche Hemera wanders across Hylaria. By day, she is a gentle healer, using stored kind souls to soothe pain; by night, she is a soul-hunting judge—but this "judgment" is never for destruction, but for salvation.
Those she "reaps" are mostly dying souls who voluntarily entrust their last wishes, or prisoners trapped by evil forces. Her ice provides them temporary resting places, her fire purifies their paths forward. Eventually, these souls will all follow her guidance to Hylaria's "Well of Reincarnation," beginning new journeys.
She always remembers that dawn when she saved her friend, remembering the weight of her name:
- Psyche — The Butterfly of Souls, carrying every life that needs protection
- Hemera — Daughter of Dawn, bringing light to the lost in darkness
And the dual elements within her embody her way of protection:
- Ice — Calm, restrained, providing shelter for the innocent
- Fire — Passionate, just, burning evil until it can harm no one
